Before birth, I can help you develop your birth preferences, enrich your birthing “toolbox” of comfort measures and coping strategies, connect you to evidence-based information, and answer questions you may have. During your birthing time, I am there to help you manage through the contractions and relax in between using breathing, movement, positioning, encouragement, massage, and other comfort measures. I can also help keep you hydrated and nourished, and preserve as much of your energy as possible.
I do not make decisions for you or speak in your place, but I can support you by encouraging you to ask questions of your care provider, express your preferences and concerns, and enhance the communication between you and your care provider. Postpartum, I check in through phone calls and an in-home visit to see how you are doing, debrief the birth, and help make your life easier and more comfortable in any way I can. I can also help connect you with local resources to support you in your recovery and meeting your needs.
I am there to provide support and suggestions for your partner/support person as well, and I am especially careful that my role does not take the place of your partner or others you have invited to your birth. Rather, my role is to facilitate everyone’s optimal involvement, and together help create the best possible birth team for you.
I want you to feel well cared for and supported during your pregnancy and birth, fully informed and respected in your choices, and in tune with your instincts. I am here to make your transition into parenthood as smooth and joyful as possible.
